In 2011, SmallWorld responded to one of the most severe humanitarian crises of the 21st century by supporting the Japanese Red Cross Society following the catastrophic earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster that struck northeastern Japan.
This unprecedented disaster caused widespread loss of life, mass displacement, and long-term social, psychological, and environmental impact, particularly on children and families. Through its contribution, SmallWorld enabled the delivery of emergency humanitarian relief, child-centered recovery, and long-term resilience support for affected communities.
Funds provided by SmallWorld supported initiatives focused on child protection, psychosocial healing, and the creation of safe environments for children, including projects such as Smile Park; a large-scale, mobile indoor playground designed to allow children to play without fear, reduce trauma and anxiety, and begin emotional recovery in a secure setting.
By working through trusted institutional partners, SmallWorld ensured that resources reached children impacted by orphanhood, radiation exposure, and the breakdown of community structures following the disaster. These efforts aligned humanitarian response, public accountability, and measurable social impact, reinforcing the importance of coordinated global solidarity in times of crisis.
SmallWorld’s intervention in Japan reflects its commitment to responsible philanthropy, transparent partnerships, and sustainable recovery, demonstrating how timely action can help restore dignity, stability, and hope to communities rebuilding after large-scale disaster.
